Join us for a free event as author Caroline Topperman shares the incredible stories uncovered after her spontaneous move to her ancestral home in Poland. Her personal history is threaded with the global upheavals of World War II, revealed through the parallel wartime journeys of her two sets of grandparents. She will tell the story of her Jewish maternal grandmother, Paula, who survived the war by fleeing to Uzbekistan, and later simply walked into a medical school in Moscow and was admitted. In contrast, her non-Jewish paternal grandmother, Wandeczka, fought social norms in Kabul, to become the first woman allowed to buy groceries in her local Afghan market. Caroline will conclude by sharing the compelling journey that led her to work at an underground school for girls in Afghanistan.
